Greetings! I want to share with you how easy it is to cook dry beans in your electric pressure cooker. If you have this appliance, then you may not know how easy it is to cook rice and dry beans quickly and easily in this wonderful contraption!

In my model which is a Wolfgang Puck Bistro 5 quart electric rice/pressure cooker, it is recommended that I cook my beans from the dry stage for between 25 and 35 minutes. If my beans are a little older then I will recommend cooking them a bit longer and if they are really old, I actually recommend soaking them. It is my experience that beans from the food storage will sometimes take a while longer to cook than fresher ones that you may purchase today.

Water, beans and very important a few tablespoons of neutral oil are all you need to cook your beans quick in the pressure cooker. Mine took about 30 minutes. I actually stopped mine at 25 minutes, let the machine depressurize and then tested them. Since I am going to be using my beans to make a bean and bacon soup in the pressure cooker and I will be putting them under pressure again for 5 more minutes, I wanted mine a bit underdone. Keep that in mind when you cook yours.

Of course, you can add any seasoning to the pot that you like, but never salt or bullion because salt will prevent the beans from absorbing water properly and they will be like little stones!

I hope that you will be encouraged to try cooking beans in your electric pressure cooker if you have one, or even in your stove top version!

Remember, this is an electric pressure cooker, not a pressure canner. Canning cannot be done in this appliance. Additionally, I do not recommend cooking in the All American, pressure canner/cooker because it is aluminum. The other brands of pressure canners are not intended to be used as pressure cookers. If you have questions, always consult the manufacturers instruction manual that was included with your particular model, whether it be electronic or standard.

Happy Eating!
